REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM

WHY IT MATTERS

“Defined by feminists in the 1970s as a basic human right, it includes the right to abortion and birth control, but implies much more. To be realised, reproductive freedom must include not only woman’s right to choose childbirth, abortion, sterilisation or birth control, but also her right to make those choices freely, without pressure from individual men, doctors, governmental or religious authorities.

"It is a key issue for women, since without it the other freedoms we appear to have, such as the right to education, jobs and equal pay, may prove illusory. Provisions of childcare, medical treatment, and society’s attitude towards children are also involved.”

CALLS TO ACTION

Missouri Abortion Ban Update

10/28/19 - Indivisible Missouri Mondays -

Access to safe, legal abortion care in Missouri is on the line! Support Planned Parenthood today!

This is not a drill! Missouri could become the first state without a health center providing abortion care!

Earlier this year the GOP majority Missouri legislature passed extreme abortion ban HB 126 with no exceptions for victims of rape or incest.

Governor Mike Parson not only signed this dangerous bill into law, his administration weaponized our health and safety when his Department of Health and Senior Services denied license renewal for Missouri’s lone provider of abortion healthcare services, Planned Parenthood Reproductive Health Services in St. Louis.

Starting today, the state’s Administrative Hearing Commission will begin the license renewal hearings. According to Planned Parenthood Advocates MO, “This case will decide whether Missouri will become the first state in the country since Roe v. Wade to have zero health centers that provide abortion, impacting more than a million Missourian women of reproductive age.”

What you can do:

  1. If you are in the St. Louis area, attend and “pink out” the hearings! Details and sign up https://plannedparenthoodeventsc4.ngpvanhost.com/ngpv…/25849

  2. Make a donation to Planned Parenthood to help fight back against Gov. Parson and MO GOP attacks on our health and rights! https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org/planned-pare…/donate

THANK YOU! for answering the Missouri Mondays CALL TO ACTION!

Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft finally released language on the abortion ban referendum, but with misleading language and mere days remaining to gather signatures, the Your Choice MO coalition has decided to focus on getting to the root of the problem: the politicians who passed this draconian law in the first place.

With a strong Democratic candidate for Governor in Nicole Galloway, we see potential for a pro-choice hand on the veto pen.

What you can do:

  • Sign up here to register voters. Let’s take our state back

"The abortion-rights group No Bans on Choice faces an "impossible" task to collect enough signatures on a petition that would allow voters to overturn a Missouri law that bans most abortions after eight weeks of pregnancy, officials from the committee said Wednesday.

"Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft on Wednesday released the wording for the ballot initiative after a months-long legal battle.

"American Civil Liberties Union representatives say it’s unlikely they would collect the 100,000 signatures they need to place a referendum on the ballot before the law goes into effect on Aug. 28.

"Abortion rights advocates in Missouri quickly accused Ashcroft of willfully withholding the initiative until the latest possible date to prevent the petition receiving enough signatures. They expressed outrage that Ashcroft had waited for so long.

“'We are reviewing the ballot language released by Secretary Ashcroft today. He dragged his feet for 78 days before providing this ballot language, leaving Missourians with the impossible task of collecting 100,000 signatures in 14 days,' said Robin Utz, treasurer of the No BansOn Choice Committee. 'He has effectively prevented voters from defeating the extreme eight-week abortion ban at the ballot box.'”

Attorney General Jay Ashcroft has effectively blocked an effort by Missourians to put a referendum on the abortion ban on the ballot by refusing to do his job. Read the open letter to Jay Ashcroft from the No Ban Missouri here, and then make him regret not taking action.

What you can do:

  • Call Attorney General Ashcroft and demand he stop delaying the vote at (573) 751-4936.

  • Join the movement to register thousands of new voters and Vote. Them. Out.
The ACLU has pivoted in their grassroots efforts, and will be registering voters in the hundreds of thousands, up until the last day to register voters for the 2020 general election. This is the plan: While volunteers are having Missourians complete the voter registration cards, we will also ask the new voters to complete "Commit to Vote" cards, which will be returned to them closer to election time.

8/2/19 - The ACLU organized protests outside of each of Sec. of State Ashcroft’s Missouri offices. The protests focused on Ashcroft’s actions to effectively block a lawful, public vote on the abortion ban that was put in place by our elected representatives in Missouri.

Outside of the Missouri State office building in downtown KCMO, a spirited and diverse group - including many Indivisibles - came together to make their voices heard.

Missouri Abortion Ban

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, with the help of Attorney General Eric Schmitt, continues his extremist attack on the rights of Missouri voters and the women of Missouri.

His attempts to deny Missourians the right to a vote on banning abortion - or making it legal - is the unlawful action of an elected official determined to take away constitutional rights.

The intentional delays and political maneuvering are an abuse of the powers of the Attorney General’s office.  Our elected representatives radical anti-abortion agenda demonstrate that they are an overzealous, out-of-touch government who disregards the will of the people.  No matter how Missourians would vote on the referendum, we must all fight to protect our right to vote on critical issues.

Here's what you can do:

  • Call Secretary Ashcroft and demand he stop delaying our vote (573) 751-4936.

  • Join the movement to register thousands of new voters and Vote. Them. Out.

  • Call, write or email your Missouri State Senators and let them know that denying our right to a referendum is unacceptable and that Ashcroft must certify the ballot language by July 18.  Then, share your action (and their response) on IKC's twitter account @Indivisible_KC and with #StopTheBans.
